Dear General Secretary Bae:
My name is Tetsuo Nagasaki, general secretary of the United Church of Christ in Japan. I am overly delighted and thankful to be invited to the Presbyterian Church of the Republic of Korea’s 99th General Assembly. I pray for the Lord’s blessings to you, so that this assembly contributes to the further development and fulfillment of the church.
If I may look back in history, it was exactly 49 years ago at the occasion of PROK’s 50th General Assembly on September 25, 1965 that the UCCJ moderator, Rev. Isamu Omura, came to Korea, begged your forgiveness for what Japan had done during the WWII and promised you to contribute to restore the diplomatic ties between Korea and Japan and to promote the reconciliation and cooperation among the churches of two countries. The visit allowed the UCCJ to hold a consultative meeting in Tokyo two years later in 1967 with three churches in Korea, i.e. the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea, the Presbyterian Church of Korea and the Korean Methodist Church.
This resulted in signing the document of agreement amongst the four denominations after prayerful discussions at that meeting. Since then for five decades, the four churches have enjoyed the deep fellowship, such as personal exchanges, and the mission cooperation.
The UCCJ by the help of our Savior wishes to glorify the Lord with the PROK through the church fellowship, the mission cooperation and the promotion of the peace, justice and human rights for many years to come. Thank you.
Tetsuo Nagasaki, Rev. General Secretary
The United Church of Christ in Japan
