Thank you. I am so happy to have the opportunity to be here.
As for PROK, we have spent much of the past year preparing for the WCC meeting, and my report will focus on some of those preparations.
The main PROK endeavour at Busan had to do with Peace and Reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula, on two fronts.
Our Peace Community Movement Centre held a Madang display during the whole Assembly. They shared the story of the division of Korea and efforts for reconciliation made by our church and by past governments of Korea. The story was thus heard by many people who were invited to share signatures for our Peace Treaty Campaign. 650 signatures were gathered, and over 800 written prayers for peace were put up on the map of Korea by Assembly attendants – prayers in many languages. I was very proud the work of my staff.
Ecumenical Conversation #17 was the one on which PROK and NCCK focused, “Peace and Reunification of the Korean Peninsula”. Although the final proposal did not accept the PROK recommendation that the WCC declare a Decade of Solidarity in Aim of Reconciliation, we were pleased with the final report that came to the Assembly, and thank you who participated in the Assembly for your support on it. Especially we were glad to see that WCC themselves will sponsor a campaign to convince the governments involved of their responsibilities to sit down and negotiate with each other, without preconditions.
The Peace Train was a very important initiative to creatively express the longing of people for peace in the world, although to our disappointment it was not recognized by the WCC. 130 people from 16 nations participated in the Peace Train, half of them being Koreans from Korea and also our Diaspora, especially German Koreans. Of the 67 Korean residents travelling with the train, 26 were PROK pastors and people, among them students, 15 from PCK, 14 from Korean Methodist, and some others.
PROK continues to be active in prayer and action in the Gangjeong Village situation, demanding the naval base construction be discontinued, and were disappointed as the Assembly rolled this issue into a universal resolution on nuclear power and nuclear weapons, thus confusing and diluting the issue. (02.9, Statement on Moving towards a Nuclear-free World)
Briefly, in conclusion our Ecology Community Movement Centre also shared in a booth on Green Church, provided organic lunch boxes in the Madang hall (which were very popular) and participated in the workshop with EMS, Covenanting for Ecological Justice. As well, in one of the most pleasant aspects of the Assembly, PROK hosted a group of partner churches on each night. As far as possible, each night we brought together an African, a European, an American and an Asian partner delegation to meet each other in a relaxed setting. In this way we brought folks from 26 partner churches together. Some of you here participated in those times, and I believe it was worthwhile for us all.
Going away from the General Assembly, the PROK has much work to do in the field of preparing Christian leaders for the next generation. The PROK Youth Association is presently receiving an EMS grant called “Revitalizing Maturation Youth Discipleship Training Course”. As well, the Ecumenical Relations Department is devoting time and effort to raising knowledgeable ecumenical leaders. We want to activate exchanges and joint opportunities for study and work experience for young pastors, interns and theological students with EMS member churches and associations.
It is so good to get to know partners and the business of their churches, and so I appreciate this time with the EMS Mission Council meeting. Thank you.
