제 목: Stitched Together in God’s Love (하나님의 사랑 안에서 우리를 하나로 엮어)

Dear brothers and sisters of the PROK Executive, I bring you warm greetings today from the General Council of the UCC. As you know, General Secretary Bae and others have recently been in Canada discussing the Mutual Recognition of Ministry agreement. This will bring our already close relationship as church partners even more firmly together.
PROK 형제자매 실행위원 여러분, 저는 오늘 UCC의 총회로부터 따듯한 인사말을 전해드립니다. 여러분이 아시듯이 배태진 총무님과 임직원들은 최근 캐나다에서 다녀오셔서 그곳에서 목회협정을 위한 논의를 했습니다. 이로 인해 이미 교회 협력자로서 가까운 사이가 더욱 확고하게 될 것입니다.
I want to talk about being stitched together, and begin with a story. A Lay Education Centre in the province of Saskatchewan, called The Prairie Christian Training Centre closed recently, and the committee overseeing the closing has planned a number of events to honour this place that has been significant to the Christian walk of many people.
저는 서로 함께 꿰메어짐 (stitched together)에 대해 이야기를 하나 하면서 시작하고자 합니다. 사스카체완 주의 평신도교육센터는 이름이 “The Prairie Christian Training Centre”(PCTC)인데요 최근에 폐쇄되었지요. 그 감독위원회는 그곳에서, 많은 사람들이 기독교의 길을 걸었던 중요한 곳으로 기리기 위해, 행사를 기획했습니다.
One weekend recently there was a time of celebration called The Art of Comfort: the Quilts of PCTC. Each sleeping room at PCTC had handmade quilts made by women of small churches throughout Saskatchewan over the years and donated to the Centre, so this day was to display and honour 60 years of donations made by individuals and groups of women to PCTC.
최근 어느 주말에는 “위로의 기술: PCTC의 퀼트”라는 기념행사를 했습니다. PCTC의 숙소 각 방에는 수제 퀼트가 걸려있었지요. 이 퀼트들은 수십년간 사스카체완 전역의 작은 교회들의 여성들이 손수 만들어 기증한 것입니다. 이 날 행사는 기증 60해를 기념하기 위한 행사였습니다.
Now quiltmaking is a very important art and life skill in Canada and the US. Because of the cold winters, it was necessary to have warm blankets and the pioneers developed the quilt like these, and these are some of the quilts made.
요즘 캐나다와 미국에서는 퀼트 만들기가 매우 중요한 수공예 기술입니다. 왜냐하면 겨울이 혹한이어서 따듯한 담뇨가 필요하기 때문인데요, 저의 선조들은 이와 같은 퀼트를 개발했던 것입니다.
Why are they made like this? With many small pieces sewn together? Well, in the early days of settlement in Canada, cloth was very hard to buy, and no one could buy one big piece of pretty material. Women were very careful and would not discard anything. Every piece of worn-out clothing was recycled. Worn-out dresses, shirts, or pants, would be taken apart and ended up as parts of the patterns of quilts. It became a way of recounting the stories of a family’s history.
퀼트는 작은 천조각들을 모아 서로 꿰매어 만든 것인데요, 왜 그들은 이런 퀼트를 만들었을까요? 캐나다 정착 초기에 옷감은 너무 비싸서 누구 하나 원단을 살 수 없었죠. 여성들은 어느 것 하나 버리지 않았답니다. 다 헤어진 옷가지라도 재활용했지요. 낡은 드레스와 셔츠 바지 등등은 작은 조각으로 분리해서 퀼트를 만드는데 사용했습니다. 그것은 한 가족의 내력을 회상해 볼 수 있는 한 방법이 되었습니다.
A woman would always get a quilt for her wedding. On that quilt she would be able to recognize clothes she had worn and those around her had worn during her life, something she could tell stories about to her children in the days when there was no tv, and books were rare.
여성은 자신의 결혼식을 위해 퀼트를 만들었습니다. 바로 그 퀼트에서 여성은 일생 동안 자신과 가족이 입었던 옷, 입다가 빛 바래고 헤진 옷을 알아볼 수 있었습니다. 여성은 퀼트를 보면서 자녀들에게 이야기를 들려주었지요. 그때는 TV도 없고 책도 귀했죠.
See this piece, it probably came from a dress the girl had worn to school or to church, and this maybe her father’s shirt, and this maybe her mother’s apron.
이 조각을 보시기 바랍니다. 이건 아마도 여자아이가 학교갈 때 혹은 교회에 갈 때 입었을 드레스에서 나온 것 같습니다. 그리고 이것은 아마 아버지의 윗도리에서, 이것은 어머니의 앞치마에서 나온 것 같습니다.
Quilts can be worked on alone, but usually they are a group activity. Women gather in homes, or in church or community halls to set up a quilting frame to hold the material tight, and work and share their lives at the same time. It is a very important way of socializing in small villages, and together they make quilts for wedding gifts for young people from the communities, for people at special times in their lives, for people who suffer and need something warm (picture of quilting ‘bee’).
퀼트는 혼자서도 작업할 수 있습니다만, 대개는 여럿이 모여서 만듭니다. 여성들은 집에 모여서, 혹은 교회나 마을회관에 모여서 퀼트를 만들면서 이야기를 나눕니다. 이것은 작은 시골 마을에서는 무척 중요한 친교활동입니다. 함께 모여서 여성들은 퀼트를 만들어 다른 곳에서 이사해온 사람들에게 결혼선물로 주기도 하고 아이들의 특별한 날에 선물을 주기도 하고 때로는 가난한 사람들에게 주기도 합니다. (퀼팅’비’ 사진).
Quilts become a good image or picture for the church, a community, which is sewn together by God, the world’s great designer, to be warm for those in need of comfort and support, to be bright and practical, made up of a variety of colours and patterns representing the diversity of the people who gather in the church. Let me explain this image a little more.
퀼트는 교회라는 곳의 이미지로 아주 적합하지 않을까 합니다. 교회란 하나님이 모아 만든 퀼트와 같습니다. 하나님은 이 세상의 위대한 디자이너이셔서 이 세상에서 위로받지 못하는 사람들을 따듯하게 해 주며, 다양한 색깔과 모양들로 만들어져 밝고 실용적이어서 이 자리에 모여있는 사람들의 다양성의 표본 같습니다. 이 다양성의 이미지를 조금만 더 이야기해 보겠습니다.
Every quilt has four basic parts: a backing, a padding, a top, and stitching to hold it together. In the same way God, the Master Quilt Maker, has four parts for the patchwork quilt called the Family of God. Just as a quilt has a backing or a 'foundation' so our patchwork quilt-the family of God-has a foundation. That foundation is Jesus Christ.
퀼트는 네 개의 부분으로 이루어져 있는데요, 바닥과 패딩과 상판과 이들을 서로 묶어주는 바느질입니다. 이와 같이 퀼트제작의 마스터인 하나님은 ‘하나님의 가족’이라는 퀼트제작의 네 부분이 있습니다. 퀼트의 바닥은 퀼트제작에서 하나님의 가족에 비유하자면 그 ‘기초(터)’인 셈입니다. 이 ‘기초(터)’는 그리스도예수입니다.
Paul says, in I Corinthians 3:11: “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ”.
고린도전서 3:11, 바울은 말하길 “아무도 이미 놓은 기초이신 예수 그리스도 밖에 또 다른 기초를 놓을 수 없습니다.”
Every quilt also has a middle section a padding of wool or feathers or some other material, between the foundation and the outer covering. It is the padding that provides support and warmth in the coldest of times. In the same way, God's word, the Bible, gives us the warmth of encouragement and support that we need in every season of life.
퀼트는 또한 중간 부분인 패딩이 있는데요, 울이나 깃털과 같은 재료로 그 기초와 겉의 커버 안에 넣어주지요. 이 패딩은 냉혹한 시절에 안락함과 따듯함을 줍니다. 하나님의 말씀인 성서는 인생의 사시사철 우리에게 용기와 위로의 온기를 줍니다.
Paul said to his young disciple, Timothy: “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the people of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
바울은 그의 젊은 제자 디모데에게 말합니다. “모든 성경은 하나님의 영감으로 된 것으로서 교훈과 책망과 바르게 함과 의로 교육하기에 유익합니다. 성경은 하나님의 사람을 유능하게 하고, 그에게 온갖 선한 일을 할 수 있게 하는 것입니다.” (디모데후서 3:16-17)
The outer covering, the top of the quilt is the side with the many shapes and colours! On this top there are many fabric shapes, many different colours, all arranged to form a pattern of beauty.
퀼트 커버의 겉모습은 다양한 모양과 색깔로 덮혀 있습니다. 이 커버는 다양한 옷감, 다양한 색깔들, 여러 아름다운 패턴으로 이루어져 있습니다. 이것은 꼭 하나님의 가족과 같습니다.
Paul may have had this in mind as he said (I Corinthians 12:18), “But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as God wanted them to be.”
바울도 이와 같은 생각을 했을 것입니다. 그는 말하기를 (고린도전서 12:18) “그런데 실은 하나님께서는, 원하시는 대로, 우리 몸에다가 각각 다른 여러 지체를 두셨습니다.”
And then there is the part we don’t see unless we pay attention. The stitches of the thread. Stitches hold the quilt together. If stitches in a quilt are not properly sewn, the quilt falls apart. When I would quilt with the women in my congregation’s quilting group, my stitches were, sorrowfully, crooked and big and irregular, not tiny and even and straight like my friends were, and someone else would always have to make the secure knot at the end of the row to make sure it would stay together.
마지막으로 퀼트에는 우리가 주의해서 보지 않는 부분이 있습니다. 꿰맨 부분입니다. 마느질 부분은 퀼트를 하나로 모여줍니다. 바느질이 잘 안 되어 있으면 퀼트는 낱낱으로 떨어집니다. 제가 교회의 교우들과 함께 퀼트만들기를 한 적이 있는데요, 제가 한 바느질은 좀 뭔가 이상하게 되어버렸지요. 친구들의 바느질은 단단하고 올곧고 반듯한데 말이지요. 어떤이는 바느질을 마무리할 때 꼭 매듭으로 올이 풀리지 않게 하더군요.
In this quilt, the Family of God, we are assured we are sewn together by the very love of Jesus. By ourselves we find only confusion and strife, but with Jesus Christ in our life we find a love that quilts us together for eternity.
그러나 하나님의 가족으로서의 우리 퀼트는 예수님의 사랑으로 한땀한땀 바느질이 되어 있답니다. 우리는 항상 혼란과 다툼이 있지만 우리 삶에서 예수그리스도와 함께라면 우리는 우리를 퀼트해주는 영원한 사랑을 발견할 수 있습니다.
Let us remember the description of God’s love: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails”. (I Corinthians 13:4-8)
하나님의 사랑에 대한 묘사를 기억합시다. “사랑은 오래 참고, 친절합니다. 사랑은 시기하지 않으며, 뽐내지 않으며, 교만하지 않습니다. 사랑은 무례하지 않으며, 자기의 이익을 구하지 않으며, 성을 내지 않으며, 원한을 품지 않습니다. 사랑은 불의를 기뻐하지 않으며, 진리와 함께 기뻐합니다. 사랑은 모든 것을 덮어 주며, 모든 것을 믿으며, 모든 것을 바라며, 모든 것을 견딥니다. 사랑은 없어지지 않습니다. 그러나 예언도 사라지고, 방언도 그치고, 지식도 사라집니다.” (고린도전서 13:4-8)
So let us consider and remember that we are God’s patchwork quilt, a host of various fabrics, and pieces, all brought together and intricately stitched together into God’s family and quilted together by the love of God. We are quilted together by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Let us therefore rejoice in this wonderful God to whose family we belong.
우리가 하나님의 퀼트 작품이라는 것을 기억하고 잊지 맙시다. 여러 천조각들을 모으고 한데 모아 정교하게 바느질을 하여 하나님의 가족으로 만드시는 하나님의 사랑. 우리는 예수 그리스도의 생명과 죽음과 부활, 그리고 성령의 힘으로, 퀼트하여 모여 만들어졌습니다. 그러므로 이 우리가 속한 이 놀라운 하나님의 가족을 기뻐합시다.
Let us pray: Almighty God, Designer and Creator of the Family of God here in this place; bring us back to our foundation in you so that we may hold strong and steadfast to your will for us. Give us the kindness to support and nourish each other in our daily life. You have given each of us our own distinct pattern and purpose. Help us to work together to reflect your wonderful beauty. You have stitched us all together. Help us to keep each other from unraveling, and when we find a 'loose' thread, quilt ourselves to one another again as you bound yourself to us, so that we may bring comfort and help to your family. In your name we pray, Amen.
기도합시다: 능력이 많으신 하나님, 하나님의 가족을 이곳에 디자인하시고 창조하시고, 우리는 우리의 기초로 부르셔서 우리가 강건하고 굳게 우리를 위한 하나님의 뜻에 서게 하소서. 우리가 날마다 우리 서로를 돌보고 먹이는 마음을 갖게 하소서. 하나님은 우리 각자에게 선명한 모양과 목적을 주셨으니, 우리가 하나님의 놀랍고도 아름다운 모습을 알게 하셔서 함께 일할 수 있도록 하소서. 하나님은 우리 모두를 모아 함께 꿰매어 주셨으니, 우리가 서로 다투어 뜯어지게 하지 마시고 하나님께서 우리에게 하셨듯이 우리도 또한 우리 사이에 느슨한 부분을 서로 도와 꿰매게 하게 하소서. 그리하여 우리가 하나님의 가족이 되도록 위로와 도움을 주소서. 당신의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
