지난 9월 한국기독교장로회 100회 총회가 끝난 후 기장과 목회자상호협약을 체결한 캐나다연합교회(UCC)는 아래와 같은 질문을 통해서 기장과 연합교회의 상호 나눔과 의견교류를 강화해 왔습니다. 향후 양교단의 지속적인 소통을 통해서 목회자 교류를 위한 틀을 마련하고 JPIC 선교를 위한 상호 협력을 증진할 것으로 기대합니다.

 

[연합교회질의에 대한 배태진 총무의 응답 전문]

 

1. What do you hope the PROK gains from its new partnership with the UCC?

In Korea, the Presbyterian church has split into over 200 branches since 1950; while the United Church, since its beginning in 1925 has remained one and welcomed others as a uniting church. I would hope the Korean church would learn from your spirit and unity. I also admire the missiology of the UCC and ways of mutually respecting partners when you send missionaries out. We also want to learn about Diaconal Ministers and their special role.

2. What do you hope the UCC gains from its new partnership with PROK?

We hope the UCC will learn of minjung theology, theology of the least, In today’s world migrant workers are the minjung. We also want to share our spirit of JPIC (justice, peace, integrity of creation) and send Korean ministers to Canada who understand this spirit and share it. We hope to find ways we can co-operate in mission work, supporting each other through personnel and resources. We hope to have mutual exchanges of seminaries, of interns and of co-workers.

3. What should Canadian Christians know about the PROK's mission and work?

PROK is very committed to Missio Dei, sharing in God’s mission for the world. We want Canadians to know of our struggle for human rights, democracy and unification of Korea. During early days of the Republic of Korea, our people marched for justice and democracy. In the process, many of our ministers and people were arrested, imprisoned and tortured. At that time the UCC missionaries shared our sufferings in solidarity. This is the 70th anniversary of division of the Korean Peninsula. We want Canadians to know how we long for respectful and peaceful reconciliation with the North Korea. Every Monday evening, PROK has a prayer service and will do until that day comes for which we hope.

4. What has surprised you, so far, about the UCC?

1) The acceptance of LGBT persons in the UCC, which is impossible in PROK. Our committees tried to bring a proposal of respect forward, but our people are not ready to consider it.

2) That Rt Rev. Lee Sang Chul should have been your Moderator, which tells me how deeply UCC accepts people.

3) The acceptance of and concern for Aboriginal people, women, lay people, LGBT people in positions of leadership.

5. What was your favourite part of General Council 42? What made an impression on you there?

1) I was deeply impressed by the women who participated in General Council. In PROK, though we try hard to increase the percentage of women in our Assembly, this year it was only 8.4%. This year we had a presentation of the Gender Justice committee and will continue to work on gender balance.

2) I was very impressed by the way of decision making, the ‘warm’ and ‘cool’ cards. Cool meant we would take some more time talking, and then the decisions were made by a wonderful consensus process.

3) I was impressed that all the delegates should stay until the end of the closing worship. In our Assembly we often have a erosion of members until only a small group actually are there at the end.

4) I was impressed that I and other partners had the chance to take part in the inauguration of Rt. Rev. Jordan Cantwell. The respect given to the ecumenical partners was very wonderful, that we had a solid part of play in your General Council.

1. 한국기독교장로회가 캐나다연합교회와의 새로운 파트너쉽 관계로부터 배울 것은 무엇이라고 생각하는가?

한국의 장로교는 거의 200여개의 교단으로 나누어져 있어 서로 갈등이 심하다. 1925년에 연합교회로 출범하여 (United Church) 계속 연합해 나가는 교회(uniting)로서의 귀한 경험과 그 정신이 한국교회에도 흘러들어와 한국교회로 하나를 이루어가는 전통과 정신을 배우길 원한다. 기장이 하나님의 선교신학을 UCC에서 나누어 받았던 것처럼, UCC의 하나님의 선교신학을 diakonia로 발전시켜 나감을 신학적으로 배우길 바란다. 특별히 diakonia 목사 제도를 기장이 받아들이고 싶다. 기장이 신학생들이 UCC신학교에서 배우게 되고, 기장의 목회자들이 UCC교회에서 목회를 하게 되고, 기장의 신학자들이 UCC신학교에서 신학적 성찰을 나누게 되기를 바란다.

2. 캐나다연합교회가 기장과의 파트너쉽 체결로부터 무엇을 배우길 희망하는가?

한국교회의 신학이면서, 기장의 신학이었던, 민중 신학과 민중의 경험을 함께 나눔으로서 캐나다 안에서의 민중, 예를 들면 지주노동자들과 세계의 민중들에 대한 선교적 관심을 증대하게 될 것이다. 한국의 이민자들과 UCC 지역교회에, PROK 신학과 JPIC 정신을 지닌 목회자들의 선교를 나눌 수 있게 될 것이다. UCC의 신학교와 PROK의 신학교, UCC 노회와 총회와 PROK 노회와 총회, 양교회들 간의 교류가 증대됨으로 상호간의 영성적인 경험이 풍부해지게 될 것이다. UCC와 PROK가 세계의 어려운 지역에 공동선교를 기획하고 참여하게 될 것이다. UCC소속 목회자들과 인턴들이 PROK 기관과 교회에서 협력선교사로서 diakonia 목사로 사역케 되기를 바란다.

3. 캐나다 기독교인들은 기장의 선교와 사역에 무엇을 배워야 하는가?

한국기독교장로회가 설립된 1953년 이래 ‘하나님의 선교’(missio dei) 기치 아래 인권, 민주화, 평화통일을 위해 기도의 행진을 해 온 것과 이 행진을 하는 가운데 많은 교역자와 성도들이 투옥을 당하고 불이익과 도난을 당해 온 것, 그리고 바로 이 과정 속에서 캐나다 UCC – 선교협력동역자들이 함께 고난과 아픔을 나누었고, 선교적 연대로 굳건히 해온 일이다. 특별히 대한민국은 분단 된지 70년이 되었는데 아직도 남과 북은 서로 대립, 갈등을 심화시켜가고 있는 가운데, 남과 북의 화해를 위해 평화적 통일을 위해 힘쓰고, 애쓰고 기도하고 있는 일 – 월요평화통일 기도회를 진행하고 있다.

4. 지금까지 캐나다연합교회에 관해 흥미롭게 여겼던 것은 무엇인가?

1) 우리 한국교회에서는 LGBT issue는 아예 꺼내지도 못하고, 다만 있다면 강한 반대뿐이다. 기장 역시 성소수자 문제를 위한 신학적 준비를 하자고 했지만 부결되었다. 그런데 UCC에서는 LGBT에 속한 분이 41회 총회장이 되고 42회 총회장이 되어서 총회구성원들의 열린 정신을 경험하였다.

2) 기장출신의 목사인 이상철 목사님이 UCC에서 아시아인으로서 최초로 총회장이 되셨고 6년 동안 첀슬러가 되셔서 활동하셨는데 이는 UCC가 예수 그리스도의 열린 마음이 없으면 도무지 가능하지 않았을 것이다.

3) 원주민 출신, 여성, 평신도, 외국인, LGBT 이렇게 다양한 이들과 교회가 총회를 이루고 대표자로 세우는 일은 우리 PROK에서 놀라운 일이며, 그런 좋은 전통은 그리스도 예수로부터 나오는 것으로서 앞으로 모범으로 삼고 따라 갈 것이다.

5. 캐나다연합교회 제42회 총회에서 가장 인상적인 부분은 무엇인가?

1) 기장교단의 여성목사의 비율은 약 8.4% 인데, UCC 총대들은 거의 반 이상이 여성이었다. 청년 총대들도 적지 않았다. PROK에 양성평등 위원회를 두고 그동안 양성평등지수를 높이려고 했는데, 분명한 한계가 있다. UCC 총대 안에는 다양한 구성요소들이 조화를 이루면서 함께 자유롭게 참여하고 있음이 부러웠다.

2) PROK 총회에서는 warm과 cool card 가 있어, cool 쪽의 의견을 끝까지 듣고, 결국에는 구성원 전원 Consensus를 이루어가는 과정이 참 배울 만 했다. 그렇게 하니까 연합이 되어가는구나 느꼈다.

3) 모든 구성원들이 폐회가 될 때까지 끝까지 이석하지 않고 참여하는 것이 이채로웠다.

4) 총회장이 취임식을 할 때 협력교단 대표들이 취임선서를 하는 놀라운 경험을 하였는데, 우리 한국교회와 PROK 교회는 있을 수 없는 일이다. 열린 정신이 놀라웠다.
